The Best Game in The Yakuza Series
Yakuza, also known as "Like A Dragon," is a long-running video game series that tells us about men living in a Japanese crime organization. It's a lovable series, but it doesn't get the spotlight it deserves because of how long the story is. It's a hidden gem if you look at how the story progresses and ends in every game, but fans are arguing about which is the best entry in the series.
The first thing that we need to keep in mind is that "Yakuza is long." It's not weird because the first game, titled "Yakuza" for the global release or "Ryu Ga Gotoku" in Japanese, was released way back on December 8th, 2005. Until now, there have been 7 games in the series, without counting the spin-offs, the remakes, and the prequel. And the newest entry, Like A Dragon 8, is planned to be released in 2024.
From the first till the sixth game, we play different characters, but it mainly tells a story about a strong man called Kiryu Kazuma, a powerful ex-yakuza who drops out of his organization and chooses to take care of an orphanage. In the prequel, we also play as a one-eyed man called Majima Goro. And starting from the 7th game, we play as Kasuga Ichiban, a man with a lot of friends.
It was actually a beat 'em up game, punching through enemies like cardboard with a bicycle and strolling around a fictional town in Japan, but since the 7th game, it is now a grindy turn-based RPG game and the story shifts to another character. The old and new fans of the series are arguing over whether it should stay as a turn-based game or go back to the classic beat 'em up.
In the end, people choose their own favorite entry and still enjoy the story. Some people pick the prequel as their favorite because they love the story about how Kiryu and Majima carved their paths to become legends; some love the classic releases and how clunky they feel; and a lot of people pick the 7th game because of how relatable the main character is to the players.
